Did You Ever Feel Used?

November 3rd, 2005 | by Dr. Forbush |

It isn’t a nice feeling to know that someone you trusted has used you to get what they want. When the person who used you is someone you admired you may deny it. When it happens again, you find it more difficult to deny. You can deny it again and again several times until finally you need to recognize the truth.

This is what is happening with the Radical Right Christians. They deny that George really didn’t care when he nominated Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. But, when you have someone come out and say, “That’s right I used you and this is how I used you.” You might find it easier to swallow.

Look at what is being revelaed at the Jack Abramoff / Michael Scanlon hearings:

Consider one memo highlighted in a Capitol Hill hearing Wednesday that Scanlon, a former aide to Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Tx., sent the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to describe his strategy for protecting the tribe’s gambling business. In plain terms, Scanlon confessed the source code of recent Republican electoral victories: target religious conservatives, distract everyone else, and then railroad through complex initiatives.

"The wackos get their information through the Christian right, Christian radio, mail, the internet and telephone trees," Scanlon wrote in the memo, which was read into the public record at a hearing of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee. "Simply put, we want to bring out the wackos to vote against something and make sure the rest of the public lets the whole thing slip past them."

It doesn’t feel good, but it is clear that the Christian Right has been used.

You know, there was a stink a while back to the effect that the head of Bush’s ‘faith-based initiatives’ farce, David Kuo, had resigned shortly after the 04 election — disgusted that his office hadn’t been given much of its promised funding and couldn’t really do much.

Not being a big fan of the sloppy copulation of church & state, I thought it was rather amusing, even if bitterly so. I also wondered if the religious right would go ballistic when they found out. The story got a little bit of press, but page 10 coverage, so most people never knew about it.

I suppose the point is that you really can fool some of the people all of the time.
