Bush Success # -2486?
January 28th, 2006 | by Jersey McJones |Well, real parliamentary Democracy, fair and true, has set its’ roots Palestine. No Diebolds or Texas ballots. No siree. No one can argue with that. Not the crazed Biblical Literalists who believe that a unified Israel will bring back the Jesusinator, who will crush all the infidels - including the Jews. Not the backseat drivers of conservative American Judaism, the great ambassadors of aggravation, fighting for Zionism from accross the sea. No, not even poor dumb ol’ Bush.
The Hedge has been trimmed again as Hamas, the social populist/terrorist party, won 76 of the 132 seats in the parliament, proving once again that you can’t trust exit polls, and you can’t trust predictions - they always have an angle. The Briar poured two million buckeroos in taxpayor foreign aid money to back Abbas’ moderate Fatah and to hasten the election process. Wrong horse, wrong race.
This might be a good thing, but rather than pat himself on the back for bringing true democracy to a fractured land, the Thicket blusters in the wind about foreign aid cuts. Perhaps Hamas will begin to mainstream now the way the IRA did in the end. They already represent a ubiquitous social institutional presence in the Territories. That should ease transition, as the Cabinet has now resigned, and open more possibilities for progress.
We probably don’t have to worry that trouble may ensue between the old Palestinian political guard and Hamas, unless the West foments discord by proxy. Hamas is a powerful and young organization. The aging and disreputed remains of Arafat’s organization long lost the fight in them. But Yassin’s Hamas has got to find a way to achieve that ever-elusive “peace with honor,” and knock it off with the Elders of Zion bullshit, if they are going to ever be taken seriously beyond the scope of exploding fanatics.
The IRA mainstreamed it’s way into peaceful normality through it’s political wing, Sinn Fein. Hamas would be well-advised to seperate it’s political and militant wings, leave the religious wing to bind the core, and show it’s different faces apropos to their different missions. It’s time for the Palestinians to prove they’re up to the Two State Solution - peacefully. Meanwhile, the Briar would be well advised to put away the reactionary rhetoric, sit quietly and explain to Hamas how it’s going to be if we are going to do business. For all the kneejerk warring and imbecilic phrasing, America’s greatest tool, greatest bargaining chip, greatest weapon is not our military, not our diplomacy (especially in the past 5 years…) - it’s the Almighty Dollar. And we’d better start taking better care of that ourselves, or we’ll be the ones needing aid from Hamas someday.

I think it’s likely that Hamas will become more mainstream now that they’re in the system, like the IRA did. Arafat and Begin both made the same transition from terrorist to politician.
In any case, democracy is flowering in the Middle East. For some strange reason there hasn’t been any cheerleading from the Right; no glowing pictures of purple thumbs.

And remember most people didn’t vote for Hamas for thier “crush Israel’ agenda, they did it because Fatah (sp?) is notoriously corrupt. Kind of like the Republican Party. I wonder if they knew Jack Ambramhoff?
