What To Do About Iran?

January 30th, 2006 | by Paul Merda |

It seems our options on Iranian nuclear ambitions are limited. There is always diplomacy which hasn’t been working over the past several years; there also limited military strikes, unilaterally of course; containment a la Soviet Union style and then there is working for political change from within Iran. If Iran really wants a bomb, diplomacy is useless. Limited military strikes would only delay and cause unacceptable economic consequences. Containment means just letting them have nukes. Then there is the possibility of supporting political change from within Iran, while it may work, how do ya do it?

I need to talk to a Nuclear Physicist on this one.  There’s one that goes to the Sports Club nearby and hopefully he’ll be there for the Super Bowl next Sunday.  My question is the difference between LEU (Low Enriched Uranium) and HEU (Highly Enriched Uranium).  I need to know if they can use LEU in the energy plants.  I’ve heard that the technology is there.  I’m pretty sure that only HEU can be used for weapons.  Now, if Russia is promising to do the enriching and they will only give Iran LEU then that greatly reduces Iran’s chance of developing a Nuke.  China seems to be supporting Russia on this.

Where’s Dr. Forbush when ya need him?  Here’s the distinction…  Yes, you can run nuclear reactors with LEU, which is useless for weapons (unless you’re talking “dirty bomb”).  Here’s a couple of links:
