Maybe They Can Pray Their Way Out of Disaster
March 8th, 2006 | by Paul Merda |Dear Leader once again shows complete disdain for Constitutional principles by making the DHS create a Center for Faith-Based Aid. Not since this guy has been in office has there been so much mixing of religion and politics. Why do people think its a good idea to give Federal Tax money to churches? Is there any oversight to how these religious organizations spend the money? Are these organizations budgeting differently now? Are they taking the money that used to go to charitable work and funneling it into their multi-million dollar Mega-Churches? Are all Faiths included in this? How can you call what you do charity when you are doing it on the tax-payey dime? Talk about Pork-Barrel spending….. Why can’t they just pray to stop a disaster from occuring instead of taking money after one has? Is their god(s) listening?

Let me start by warning Cranky to hold onto his hat if he stumbles across my comment here. I have a serious problem with the government taking my money and giving it to someone else. However, I do not have any problem with faith based initiatives. It serves a two-fold purpose the way I see it. (1) Religious groups are often involved in charity so I think if the government is going to give my money away they ought to have a fair shake at it and (2) if we can support the religious groups that are doing good samaritan work then it might shift religious focus back onto doing good works and off of persecution.
I have a (possibly) unique perspective on this because I audit non-profits for a living. I have several clients getting big bucks from the government and I not only have to look at the financial side of things but how well they are implementing their stated objectives. Because my boss is also an ordained Baptist minister I have quite a few clients who are religious organizations. None of my religion-based clients currently receive gov’t funding but some are very worthy of the opportunity. And, coming from me, that is saying alot because I have a tendency to find religion guilty until proven innocent.
