Let Me Worry About What My Children See
March 23rd, 2006 | by Paul Merda |Sorry folks, I know there are alot of Hillary lovers around here, but this time she is dead wrong. Senator Clinton would make the government a watchdog over everything children hear and see in the media, from violent video games to sex-loaded movies. Sen. Clinton does not think that children’s parents are capable of making decisions about what their children see, she thinks government knows better. I refuse to believe that violent video games or television negatively affect children, after all, I am part of a generation whose cartoons shown more acts of violence in ten minutes than you got to see through all of “Saving Private Ryan”; well not really but I think most of readers know what I am saying.
Let parents determine if their child is mature enough to play “Grand Theft Auto, San Andreas”. It is none of our governments business…. Why must Senator Clinton join forces with the government intrusion people? Senator Clinton, there are a whole lot of other issues far more important to the American People such as Healthcare, Iraq, Civil Liberties, etc. Instead of trying to suspend civil liberties in the guise of protection like the other party has, please embrace freedom once again!

Why is it that everyone seems to be so concerned with my children and it seems like no one is concerned with their own children?

Here is one area where I’m torn. But I think what we need is not regulation and oversight but education. Psychological studies have demonstrated that violent games and shows promote violent behavior. The amount of time spent watching and playing these games has a direct correlation to violent behavior. However, the worst thing for kids to watch is not saving privat ryan. In fact that is a good thing. The worst is…anyone? Cartoons. Second worst…anyone? The news. Cartoons show violence without any negative side-effects, such as death. In Saving Privat Ryan there is plenty of death and injuries. The news presents everyday violence and promotes in children a view that violence is normal. Cop shows, which carry a TV-14 rating have comparatively low correlation values. Violent games, while having death and injury, have sudden regeneration making death and injury seem like small prices to pay. So, while I don’t think the government should limit what is shown I think they should work harder to educate parents. I personally don’t want my kids playing with a kid who has been watching violent shows and playing violent games all day and thus being especially violent towards my child. My not allowing my child to watch a show won’t keep him safe from a violent child.
