US Prison Population Rises 2%

May 23rd, 2006 | by Paul Merda |

So much for the Land of the Free it seems. US prison systems are swelling at an alarming rate due mostly to Draconian drug laws. Why do we imprison people for victimless crimes? Why does our society think it is worth the financial and social cost to put so many of our citizens behind bars? If the only thing someone did was smoke some crack, why is it necessary to take their Freedom? We need to decriminalize recreational Drugs because we can not afford to continue down this path….

Agreed! And it isn’t ’society’ that is keeping these laws on the books- it’s the paid for politicians, their corporate donors (who fear legalization will cost them revenue) and the incarceration unions (who fear that legalization will cost them jobs).

Neither is true though. It’s another fear based line of crap that people are too busy to critically examine for themselves.
