American Attitudes Unchanged About Middle East Topics
August 17th, 2006 | by Omnipotent Poobah |A just-released survey by the Pew Center shows that although Americans are paying “a great deal of attention” to the London bomb plot and other Middle East developments, most remain unchanged in their support for Israel and their assessment of George Bush’s performance. Fifty-two percent of those surveyed said they sympathized more with Israel’s position in Lebanon (up from 44% last month). Bush’s performance is up a scant 1% from July and now hovers at 37%, about what it has been for the past three months.
Surprisingly, with all the emphasis on the “War on Terror” and Iraq, the top issue voters would most like to hear discussion about was education (with 15%). Iraq was the prefered topic by only 10%, with terrorism ending up at the bottom of the survey with only 2%.
In another critical measure, respondents said they were more concerned that the , “GOP majority would over-extend US troops” (46%) than they were that the “democratic majority will weaken terror efforts” (35%).
