So why are they bothering?
August 27th, 2006 | by Craig R. Harmon |We learned recently that, although the UN forces to be deployed to Southern Lebanon will have rules of engagement, they will not fire on Hizbullah fighters for fear that Hizbullah might, you know, fight back so they are useless for preventing Hizbullah from doing whatever they want to do in S. Lebanon. If they won’t fire in Hizbullah fighters, what are the chances they’d fire on Israeli forces? I’d say next to nil or nil.
Now we learn that UN will not stop Syria sending weapons to Lebanon unless the Lebanese government requests them to and, well, what are the chances of that happening?
So, to recap. 15,000 UN peacekeepers are being sent into Southern Lebanon. They won’t disarm Hizbullah in accordance with their own resolutions. They won’t fire on Hizbullah. They won’t fire on Israel. They won’t prevent Hizbullah from being rearmed…
Would somebody please explain to me what the UN peacekeepers are going into Southern Lebanon to do? Can the UN be any more useless?

Christ..I have to admit, it sounds about as useful as tits on a bullfrog..
And if they aren’t stopping the weapons from moving into Hezbollahs hands..just wtf are they doing?
If they stop the weapons..they stop the shooting..jeebus this is retarded.

Just another day at the UN.

I am less into debating who’s right or wrong, and more into questioning things that are totally fucked from the start. The UN is getting into a bad place quickly here, especially with Iran…
So did World War III start with 9/11 or does it start when we bomb Iran’s “New-Q-Ler” plant?

Craig H. - Spot on.
Steve - How do you get to bombing Iran from the origional post? Just wondering.

Well, At least we can hope the UN forces won’t blow away any UN observers.

Actually, Craig, I kind of hope that since the Lebanese told the Syrians to get out of Lebanon, they might also ask the UN to stop the Syrians from sending arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Liberal Jarhead,
“Well, At least we can hope the UN forces won’t blow away any UN observers.”
Actually, for days before that happened, according to communications from the UN base, Hizbullah had been firing rockets from the immediate area of the UN base. Chalk up another kill of innocents the moral responsibility of Hizbullah’s use of human shields.
“…they might also ask the UN to stop the Syrians from sending arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”
Yes, that would be nice…except that (a) the Lebanese government is a weak coalition, the majorty of those in Lebanon want a strong, armed Hizbullah and there’s no way a Lebanese government could survive such a request. (b) Hizbullah is already a part of the government so it’s not immediately obvious that the Lebanese government could even muster the political will to ask the UN to stop the resupply of weapons to Hizbullah. Now pigs could fly if they had wings but I don’t believe there’s a chance in a million that the Lebanese government will (c) sign it’s own death warrants (and I mean that literally; Hizbullah tends not to wait for votes to be counted; they’ll just blow up your car or waste a few bullets on you and your family).
But hope springs eternal. If they should ask them to do that, that would be a big surprise. But since we’ve already established that (d) the UN forces won’t be firing on Hizbullah, who doubtless will object to having their resupply lines shut down, and I don’t mean ‘object’ in the sense of holding peaceful protest rallies but in the sense of ‘well start shooting rockets at you until you are all dead’, even if the Lebanese government asks them to stop weapons shipments at the border, the UN won’t do it. Also, (e) the Syrians have already said that they would take troops on the border as an act of war. What do you suppose the chances are that UN peacekeeping troops will risk a war with Syria and Hizbullah?
Yeh, me too.
The UN is useless. Now no doubt it is useless because of the failures of UN member nations. But does it really matter why the UN is useless?
