Today In History- “I Have A Dream”
August 28th, 2006 | by Ken Grandlund |It was exactly 43 years ago today the the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his historic “I Have A Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln memorial in Washington, D.C., a speech that helped spark and solidify the Civil Rights movement in this country.
America has come a long way in those 43 years, but we are still no where near becoming the kind of country that Dr. King hoped we would be. We need only look back one year to the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina to see that there is still a large disparity in America and that in many regions, that disparity is occurring along racial lines.
Hell, it was just last week that some Louisiana bus driver tried to replay the whole Rosa Parks scenario.
“I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.” - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
How much longer will it be until these words become more than just filler in our national psyche?
