We Don’t Need No Stinking Ozone Layer

Reports show that this year’s Antarctic ozone hole is the biggest ever since recording began. The latest measurements show that Earth’s ozone layer hole is now larger than the entire North American continent. But hey, there’s no such thing as human impact on global climate, right?

Ozone depletion is almost entirely caused by the release of human-produced gases such a bromine and chlorine. Yet despite banning many compounds that release those gases, the lifespan of those already released into the atmosphere is quite long.

No matter that the ozone layer is what shields Earth and her inhabitants from ultraviolet radiation emitted from the sun. We’ll just have to whip out that new SPF 400 sunblock and continue on with business as usual for the next 60 years or so until the ozone layer regenerates itself.

An interesting quote from the article you link to:

“The size of the ozone hole varies year to year depending on temperature variations in the Antarctic stratosphere. Colder temperatures result in larger and deeper ozone holes, while warmer temperatures lead to smaller ones. This year, the lower stratosphere was about 5 degrees Celsius (9 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler than average”

    9 Degrees cooler than average.
