The Disney Posts, part 1: Save the Environment

October 22nd, 2006 | by steve |

No time for a picture of it hanging above the toilet. But as I was getting out of the shower… (wait this is sounding gross).

Seriously though… In the hotel bathroom there is this “Save the Environment” placard discussing Bath towels and Linens. It talks about the millions of gallons of water and detergent that wasted at hotels across the country. If you are staying multiple days they ask that you “re-use” the towels in order to keep out environment clean. Hanging them back up tells the maids that they are not to wash them, and leaving them on the floor tells the maid, you’d like them clean.

Well now… Isn’t that the way we should be informing people about the enviroment? I mean, it’s a whole helluva a lot different than happening on someone driving a Hummer and screaming at them. Or getting so serious about the environment that there is no room for discussion or not informing someone who’s naive about it.

The environmental situation proposed by this hotel is much like the honor system at your office. You know, someone brings in bagels or donuts or something and you are supposed to leave a dollar for eating one. Nobody’s watching you day and night, but hey, we hope you make the right choice. And you leave that dollar, or forever suffer the guilt.

And that’s it. That’s the right way to go about the environmental issue. Give choice and consequences and let someone figure it out on their own.

As the manager of a large hotel I can tell you that the primary reason for those signs is economic: every load of wash that doesn’t have to be done saves the hotel substantially on labor, water, and chemical costs. The enviornmental factor is just a plus, but a big one.
