Charlie Crist, Yet Another Gay Florida Republican?

October 28th, 2006 | by Jersey McJones |

Being new to Florida and it’s Wonderful World of Wacky Wonkery, I hadn’t heard the rumors of the terminally single Charlie Crist’s homosexuality. And it really doesn’t matter to me, except that it apparently does matter to him and his voters. And, Gabriel Rotello points out in this Huffington Post piece, it wouldn’t matter to him either, except:

“…Crist opposes adoption by gay couples and favors a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. If I were a Florida voter, these facts would raise a host of moral, ethical and even psychological questions if Crist himself is a gay man. …his strenuous denials raise serious and legitimate questions about his truthfulness and credibility…”

Fair point. It also makes one wonder if his self-flagellating suppression of his biological urges make him a prime candidate for Mark Foley/Jim McGreevey-esque escapades.

Rotello also points out something that I’ve certainly noticed (or should I say “not noticed?”) as well - the Florida press - which is extremely conservative - has completely ignored the story up until now…

“So Memo to Florida Editors and Reporters:

You have a professional obligation to report on stories that have a bearing on the truthfulness, integrity and ethics of those running for the highest offices in your state. If politicians make claims about their lives and backgrounds that you have reason to believe may be false, you have a duty to report that, to investigate it, and lay the results before the voters.”

If Crist were a Democrat, and a liberal out-of-the-closet one at that, you can be sure the media would focus in on it like a bad ten year old boy with a magnifying glass on an ant. Of course, then it really wouldn’t matter. He’d be who he is and we’d all know it. He wouldn’t get elected, of course, but that’s Florida for you. It’s a political shit-hole. Heck, you should see some of the campaign ads they have down here! Crist’s main ad attacks Jim Davis, his Democrat opponent, for not showing up in the House - the House that had the worst attendence record in history anyway - the House in which the Dems have been completely relegated to side lines - and all this when the man is running for governor! Of course he’s going to miss time! And what does it matter? Crist even goes on to point out that Davis has had only five bills passed in ten years. Well, duh! It’s a miracle, or a damned big credit to Davis, that the GOP let him have THAT many!

Yet Crist retains a solid lead in the polls. There’s a lot of dopes in Florida.

That could be changing, though (not the “dopes” part, unfortunately, but the “lead…”). The new CW network did a piece on this. It’s just a metter of time before Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert move ine. Of course, the old fogeys in Florida don’t watch those sorts of shows. But now, even the Florida press is picking up the story, as a former Katherine Harris aide came forward the other day, admitting to trysts with Crist, though not at a briss (sorry about that…). This could be one hell of an “October Surprise” for Florida. If the old fogey conservatives of Florida sit this one out, Florida’s gonna have itself a Dem for governor, and quite a few other seats. Not that Davis is much of a Dem, true. He’s certainly no Liberal, and few have even bothered to take the pains to paint him as such. But he’s no Crist with a tryst but not at a briss! (sorry about that, again…)

And let’s face it, the GOP does this to itself. Just as the RCC holds the blame for it’s gay-priest scandals, the GOP can only look to itself for it’s gay scandals. When you are irrational about something, you’re going to suffer for it. It’s just like Superstition, as Stevie Wonder says, “When you believe in things that you dont understand, then you suffer.”

Let the Suffering begin!

Well that may be true, but think about it this way:  You hate gays.  You have a guy willing to carry out your gay hating agenda even when he himself is gay.  The other guy, who isn’t gay, will not carry out your gay hating agenda.  Who would you vote for??

I hate gays?  Really?  You’re fuckin’ schmuck, huh?

I believe that was rhetorical, JMJ. His point is simply that Crist, as an anti-gay gay will still carry the hate stick that Davis will not. Sometimes that cup of hate carries an odor, but if you like the stuff, you’ll still pucker up.

I tried to hijack this site in order to pimp my own hate site, but the mods busted me for it. Now I guess I’ll head down to the local gay bar and join the rainbow coalition, treat women respectfully, turn in my guns and contribute a year’s salary to the NAACP. I’ll still feel guilty, but it’s a start.

Nah, I like what I did even better. Thou shalt not kill the traffic snatcher, but ridicule is on the table.
