Move over, Mel Gibson

November 20th, 2006 | by Craig R. Harmon |

your reign as top entertainment biggot has come to an end. That place of dishonor now goes to the guy who brought Cosmo Kramer to life, Michael Richards.

Hey, at least Gibson could honestly say he was drunk, that it was the booze talking. What’s Richards’s excuse?

Too bad. I loved his performance in Seinfeld and UHF — I mean, who hasn’t had a favorite mop that he’d risk his life to get back? Now those letters stand for “Ultra Huge F*ckup”. It was a good career while it lasted.

What a dork.

I’ve got a theory about what happened to him, but it’s WAY too long to post here. I put it on my blog:

I hope everyone reads it, and takes it into consideration.

This is bullshit, How many times have we heard a black person refer to another black person as “nigger”. They can say it amongst themselves but if a white person says it we’re in deep crap. I am Italian American and my ancesters were used very badly also. We still are called Waps,Dago, grease ball and a whole lot more. You don’t hear us crying about it and nobody gets arrested for calling us that. I personally have never used that particular N word but I still refer to black people as Negro’s. My parents were respectable people and they also refered to black people as negros. I don’t see any disrespect in the word Negro, I have used it and I will continue to use it

Hey Mike, I guarantee you that if someone called you one of those names to your face out of anger you would pop them in the nose.

And “Kramer” didn’t use the word negro, so stay on topic. He used the “n” word and he used it in anger. That is a lot different than two homies addressing each other as “nigga.” It’s not right but if they choose to degrade themselves and not pop each other in the nose for calling each other a derogatory term then let them show their ignorance.

But a public figure should know better, wouldn’t you agree?

Who is Michael Richards anyway? Kramer was a fictional character on a show that hasn’t aired a new show for over 10 years. He’s just another angry loser, and he’ll forever be remembered as the racist comedian (if that’s what he is?) that couldn’t handle heckling. I completely agree with everyone that what he spewed was offensive and racist, but nobody seems to mention the cracker comments that were slung back at him without pause.. The shit obviously slings both ways.

What a dumb waste of time.  With news about 3700 deaths in Iraq and AIDS reaching the 39 million mark, we’re worried about the latent anger of a one-time TV co-star who went off the deep end one single night of his life, trying to scratch together some dough at a comedy club.

Americans need to turn off their big screens and get a life.  Perhaps if we did something other than tune in to the boob tube and melt our brains with corporate driven news bites we’d actually get out there and form a community and quell some of the racism we’re so (gasp) “offended” by.

First of all, thanks to whoever voted me onto the front page. Very cool.

Second, thanks for your reactions, everyone. I agree that Richards’s tirade isn’t the most earth-shattering item on the news but we have all sorts of posts here at Bring it On! and this is one of them. If this post doesn’t jangle your chain, there are plenty of other posts to read and comment on.

‘Spic’, ‘wop’, ‘kike’, ‘nigger’, ‘wet-back’ all are hurtful and hateful epithets. They aren’t funny fodder for comic routines or for shutting down hecklers. I was raised to never use such terms and to shun those who do. People ought not be lumped together by race or religion only to be derogized. Such names demean the target and the name-caller and diminish us as a society and make getting along together all that much harder.

‘Nigger’ used by a white man has an entirely different vibe than two blacks using ‘nigga’ and there’s no use pretending otherwise.

Heckling is stupid. If you don’t like the comic, leave. Sorry you wasted your money but we all make mistakes that cost us a few bucks. We live and learn.

Again, thanks to all the commenters. I appreciate you all.

The two African American hecklers who called Michael Richards a Cracker please apologize to the American people. I don’t care which show you appear on just do it because it is racist and has offended many people.
