Britain may start pulling out of Iraq

LONDON (AP) — Britain said Monday it expects to withdraw thousands of its 7,000 military personnel from Iraq by the end of next year, while Poland and Italy announced the impending withdrawal of their remaining troops.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski said his country, a U.S. ally in Iraq and Afghanistan, would pull its remaining 900 soldiers out of Iraq by the end of 2007. And Italian Premier Romano Prodi said the last of Italy’s soldiers in Iraq — some 60-70 troops — will return home this week, ending the Italian contingent’s presence in the south of the country after more than three years.

As the Coalition of Willing began to feel more like the Coalition of the Killing, they started to fall apart. Though some 20+ countries are sticking with the Coalition thus far, few of them are offering more than just moral support, and that’s about all they have to give anyway. There are only a few thousand non-US troops on the ground there now, and if Britian and Poland pull out, there will be only the equivilant of a foreign Boy Scout jamboree to assist us there. Since the fighting began, Japan, Spain, the Dutch and Ukrainians, Nicaragua and Honduras, and the Philippines have all pulled their troops out of Bush’s tragic debacle in Iraq. Meanwhile, the US is pressing NATO to take on Afghanistan, though it seems it may be too late their as well.

Maybe we should have listened to the French after all.

Bet the French are glad we wouldn’t allow them to participate in the reconstruction as well. Everyone is putting a deadline on participation..but us.

    Jersey,

They’ve made clear that this pull out is dependent upon facts on the ground and they’ll still be in Iraq, just in barracks rather than on the streets. Of course, as a comedian over here said:

“Anyone want to take a bet that come March the ‘conditions on the ground’ are just peachy for withdrawal regardless of what the conditions on the ground are?”

    Exactly, Paul!

Paul, do you agree that the comedian hit the nail on the head with regard to a timeline for withdrawal? The powers that be can call it whatever they want, use what ever excuse they wish..but it boils down to this…everyone wants a deadline to this madness, except the war-mongering supporters of it.

    Dusty,

Given that we have elections in May, I would not be surprised if some good news came out of Iraq in March or April. Which, coincidentally, is when the current not timetable is pointed towards for withdrawing from active engagement in Basra.

Ah, see…I didn’t realize that Paul..thanks for pointing it out :)
