Pinochet Dead, American Imperialism Next?

December 10th, 2006 | by Jersey McJones |

In 1964 Salvador Allende, a socialist, ran for President of Chile. The US government covertly poured millions of bucks into the election to ensure his defeat. He lost. In 1970, he ran again, and won, not by much, but he did win. By the end of 1973 he was dead, fleeing from a coup, a coup that the senate Church Commission, of Watergate fame, decided the US had nothing to do with. Oh, and I’m a NFL star wide receiver with a 12 inch penis.

The coup installed Augusto Pinochet, a well-to-do military man with ties to the ever flailing condition of Equador and Africa. He was pro-America though, so so much for that. He tortured and/or killed thousands of Chileans. The disparate class structure of Chile remained intact under Pinochet, and Chile remained a nice, cheap labor market for America. But Chile, as ancient a country as the Americas have, resisted. By 1990, he was out. Then came exile, then came trials, then came the McNamara-esque mea culpa, and then, finally, death.

Chile is now a prosperous, moderately socialist nation.

Pinochet’s dead now, and so is our international reputation. Sound familiar?
