Compassionate Cop Sidelined For Caring

January 23rd, 2007 | by Ken Grandlund |

I’ll never be one to criticize someone for being too compassionate, and the case of Bradenton, Florida police officer Nicholas Evans is not going to be the exception. It seems that Evans has been reassigned to desk duty after newspapers reported on a recent episode where he arrested a homeless woman who was wanted for violating a court order.

It seems that when he placed the woman under arrest, he took extra care in making sure her possessions (which were comprised of a shopping cart filled with clothes and some food) would be safely protected until she was released. In doing so, he guided the cart to the police station with one hand while driving his patrol car with the other.

“My husband is not the type of person who would get rid of a stranger’s belongings because it was convenient.”
says Liz Evans, wife of the now maligned officer.

Evans was ordered to undergo retraining and counseling in addition to being reassigned to desk duty.

I’ll admit that Evans may not have used the best judgment, but his heart was certainly in the right place. If only more folks in positions of authority took the time to care about poeple…

The linked article gives more detail about the incident.

Silly, probably unsafe, but at the end of the day is this a bad thing?

I agree Tom- definitely not the best plan, but still, the compassion is what hit me. Instead of not giving a shit about some homeless persons cart of goodies, this cop actually went out of his way to safeguard her possessions. If you ask me, a little more of this kind of thinking (and acting, when appropriate) can go a long way.

I read about this in the local papers.  So much for compassion.

He may need more common sense, but he obvious has compassion and a deep interest in his community.  These are the qualities we need more of.
