Bring It On!

Dear John Edwards,

March 22nd, 2007 | by steve |

Hey… what are ya doin’ man? We all knew your wife had cancer. Remember 2004? Sheesh! I remember. All I can say is:

That poor woman…

Look… anybody getting cancer, especially at young age is tragic. I feel sorry for the woman. I hope she gets better. I really want her to live a healthy life.

But dude, to wheel her out and say, “Hey! She still has cancer! But, I’m still running… We’re gonna make a go at this…” is a bit ludicrous.

When I saw this, I was like…”Dude! I know she has cancer… thanks for the update!” Guess what John… my back still hurts, I’m getting a spinal tap, I still will vote for a Republican (if a decent one makes it through).

Thanks for listening.

Your Pal,

steve

    Dude,

You’re fucking warped!!!!!! Anybody running for the highest office in the land has to expose the obstacles they will face that might sway voters not to vote for them.

    It’s a catch 22.

The announcement might have ruined his chances but atleast he was honest.

    Fuck have some compasion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And with this I move you to the front because this point of view needs to be talked about. (then again maybe nobody cares)

I gotta say as an observer with a very sick and stricken wife, MS…Guillean Barre…Bone Cancer…Emphasyma, well truthfully nothing gets better review on a man’s ability to persevere than a very sick wife in the background while he presses on. (ok, so switch the genders as needed!)

I don’t feel the man could knowingly perpetrate a farce here, and yes he has to disclose, but the press has its inherant free pass as always. All I’m saying is that when running against a woman and a “black”, this sort of thing does elevate him to some frontpage scrutiny which can’t hurt. That being said steve, you are a man in pain physically, and maybe it has calloused some of your humanity?

Elizabeth Edwards is a trooper. God bless her. John Edwards is her husband, doubtless he loves her dearly. Me? I can’t imagine running a presidential campaign while my wife has active cancer. Uh uh. John Edwards is young enough that ‘08 isn’t his last hope for presidential office. The only thing I’ll say about his continuing to run is this: it’s not what I would do.

I get the impression that you think John is pressing on DESPITE Elizabeth. That marriage is one of mutual respect and decision making. I don’t think you can speak for their commitment to each other. He’s not shooting from the hip here. They DISCUSSED this, and decided together what would work for them. I may personally think that Edwards’ future campaign money will evaporate, but I will respect the mechanics of a 30 year marriage.

Well Steve, as a person who has seen cancer ravage my family there is a big difference between my wife “had” cancer and it is in remission and my wife “has” cancer and may very well die. When  you have to start cancelling campaign stops because your at your wifes side, people want to know why.

    Jet,

Just wondering…when you say that you get the impression that “you think John is pressing on…” whom are you addressing, me, Steve, or someone else? In the event you were addressing me, I have no problem with this decision. If it’s what they both want, that’s fine with me. I spoke for nobody but myself. I couldn’t do justice to my own need to devote my life to my wife’s survival and to becoming President. What John thinks he can do is up to him to decide.

Exactly. It’s the difference between “Thank God…” and “Dear God, please…”

Look guys… And thanks for bringing this to the front page…

Regardless if I was a Republican or not has no bearing on my thoughts here.  Can’t you see this coming?  He’s a rich white guy.  Anyone who has ever been President is a rich, white Protestant (sans Kennedy) guy.  The democratic party is going diverse this time around and actually I whole heartedly believe that is a good thing… even if a Republican wins.

But look…you got a pot full of ethnicity and diversity in Bill Richardson, Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton.  John Edwards does not fit this theme.  He is the odd ball in the mix.  He is also the one I see making the most noise.  Everywhere I look, I don’t see Hillary or Obama I see that guy even though he is low in the polls.  Rolling his wife out there humanizes him.

And actually Tom Baker makes a great point here:

“When  you have to start cancelling campaign stops because your at your wifes side, people want to know why. ”

Explaining why is positive for Edwards no matter how look at it.  If you wanna bash me over it, fine…  I can take it.  But this is exactly what it looks like, sympathy.  It’s being spun into a positive light.  I don’t think it is a farce…  I truly believe she has cancer…  I do not deny that.  But c’mon…  Craig is correct… there is always next time.

And Steve O…  However sarcastic my post is… You are correct… it is a Catch 22.  I’d probably do the same thing.

    Paull,

I had to read your comment again.  Let’s just say if the spinal tap comes back positive, meaning… positive for MS.  I’d be cool with it.  I’d be cool with it because I have spent the last six months thinking about it and I think I can accept it.  But at least I’d know and could somewhat predict an outcome and manage it.  All I can do is hope.  Kind of puts faith into play I guess.

Maybe my post here does sort of vent a little of that frustration out, I don’t know.

    steve,
Misery, pain, confusion, and the unknown transcend party lines. I know all to well the wisdom in your last comment.
    peace.

Until this past week, the Edwards’ were pretty sure that Elizabeth was now cancer-free.  It has returned…he wasn’t re-announcing the breast cancer from 2004.  It’s back and in her bones now, “dude”.

There is only treatment no cure for metastatic Ca. Hopefully she will live a few years at least. Publicity is a double edged sword. There are those among who may vote for him out of sympathy. There are those among us who believe he is using the illness as a way to garner sympathy and the vote. There is no right or wrong the feelings are subjective and do not require negativity. I believe all here are capable of compassion and the belief that the ultimate decision is in the hands of the Edward’s. Believe me when I tell you cancer is cruel and harbors no prejudice based on your beliefs and your written words. Five people in my family have suffered cancer, four died. My two year old great niece is undergoing chemo for Leukemia. Hopefully we will all have a positive though for the Edwards. LV

The way I understand what has gone on, Elizabeth Edwards may have been the one who told her husband to press on with his campaign.  Well, God bless her!!!  As I mentioned in a comment here, she has class.  And Edwards going on with his campaign means that they, as a couple, are not going to let this get them down, and aren’t going to play the “victim”.  Like I said, God bless her!!!

I have no interest in seeing John Edwards as President, but I would never begrudge him the opportunity to try, or for the decision to keep on campaigning.

My apologies, Craig. I was addressing Steve. It looks like we were posting in at nearly the same time.

    Jet,

Apology accepted but not necessary. No harm done. I just wanted to clarify my previous statement in case it had been misunderstood. We’re still friends.

By the way, I have an interest in such things, is there a story behind your choice of “Jet” in your BIO! name? Is it short for something, a nick-name from childhood or what? If you don’t mind my asking.

  19. By Jet Netwal on Mar 23, 2007 | Reply

It is a nickname from high school. I still use it, and it’s much shorter to type than my given name. :-)
