From wiki: While the exact origins of chess are unclear, the modern rules of chess first took form in Italy during the 16th century. The rules kept being slightly modified until the early 19th century, when they reached their current form.
So I don’t friggin know either. Probably something to do with light vs dark. Dark being evil?
