Conservatives Against Intelligent Design (?)
June 6th, 2007 | by Jersey McJones |Yes, there is a group out there known as C.A.I.D. - Conservatives Against Intelligent Design! But it’s not quite what it’s cracked up to be…
CAID holds that there is no conflict between evolution and religion because each speaks to a different level of understanding and to a different level of explanation: Namely empirical versus metaphysical.
Metaphysical? No conflict?
…there is nothing fundamentally which implies a conflict between religion & evolutionary theory, but, there are religious traditions which conflict with evolutionary theory.
Nothing? No conflict?
Let’s see… What does Genesis say?
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
No conflict???
I digress. Back to CAID…
…the historical reality is that “fundamentalism” is a reactive phenomenon of the modern age which arose to challenge various counter-religious and post-religious ideologies which drew from the findings of science in a melange strongly infused with scientistic biases.
Gee, I guess Ron Paul was right then, huh? I guess there IS a reason the “Islamofascists” attacked us on 9/11! It doesn’t seem very “conservative,” does it? And what the hell is “scientistic?” My guess would be yet another sleazy con bait ‘n switch, reducing science to a dogmatic epistemology.
…seemingly everyone of a secular bent (and some who are religious) wants to have their ideas supported by or connected to evolution.
This is a ubiquitous (and sleazy) conservative bait ‘n switch that I’ve seen many times. It suggests that eugenics, for example, which was popular with the NAZIs, is a “secular” (re: Liberal) standard, and so therefore Liberals are like NAZIs. Of course, in reality, most of our “ideas” are in no way related to our understanding of evolution, and eugenics was rejected by Liberals long, long ago, meanwhile many racist conservatives to this day cling to the concept, whether they label it “eugenics” or not. Bait. And. Switch.
Not only that, but a lot of people who research or write about evolution often try to extend their discussion of darwinism onto cultural phenomena as well.
So, here we have a group that claims to reject Intelligent Design, but sees no connection to cultural evolution and biological evolution, as though there is essentially a difference. The fact is that our culture is a product of our biology and therefore our biology is also a product of our culture. Now this is plainly obvious and evident to an educated person. To a conservative, biology and culture are as unrelated as religion and science, I suppose.
I won’t go on. You should read the site, though. It’s a laugh. These guys don’t even know what they believe and why!
Typical cons. All rationalizing, no rationality.

Yet social darwinism was invented by and still subscribed to by conservatives.

Exactly! But Hitler just happened to use the word “socialist” in his party’s name, so therefore all “Liberals” (whom cons are convinced are all “socialists”) must be NAZIs who believe therefore in Eugenics!
It’s that sort of twisted, stupid, over-rationalized, psuedo-logic that leads to the sorts of disasters we have today in American politics and thought.
