Maybe Obama Made the Wrong Speech

March 23rd, 2008 | by Omnipotent Poobah |

After Barack Obama’s former minister made racially insensitive remarks, Obama found it necessary to make a speech about race relations. But as important and eloquent as that speech was, perhaps it wasn’t the right one.

Obama’s minister, Jeremiah Wright, followed a long tradition of clergy using their non-secular pulpits as very secular bully pulpits. Wright preached about race. Jerry Falwell preached about gays and liberals. Fred Waldron Phelps, the loony pastor of the infamous Westboro Baptist church, preaches hate for just about everyone. That’s a lot of praying and precious little of it has anything to do with the Bible, but it does have a lot to do with advancing political viewpoints.

During the golden age of televangelis m Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, et al rose from relative obscurity by parlaying their small churches into multinationa l religious conglomerate s with all the power and funding of multinationa l companies. And like the CEOs of multinationa ls, they had political mojo to spare. Campaign contribution s, ownership of media outlets, and control of unified voting blocks allowed them to steer politicians into positions they promoted. We didn’t become a full-fledged theocracy, but we came about as close as at any time in our history.
