But if the Democrats are smart (please, for once in their lives), they'll put a bill together that includes: some increased offshore drilling; forcing the oil companies to drill on part of the 68 million acres where they already hold leases; extending tax credits for renewable energy sources (right now they'll expire at the end of '08); and making the trading/speculating process more transparent so that blatant oil speculating will be visible to regulators. (Those last 3 ideas have already been defeated this year by Congressional Republicans. We can't allow them to be defeated again.) This bill will have to be a complete package -- take it or leave it. No amendments. And if the bill doesn't pass, the Republicans will be painted as the "obstructionists" who are single-handedly responsible for working Americans suffering at the gas pump.
